I would love to hear more about the stereotypes created by Dunham in Girls and ask if you have watched her new show, Generations (on HBOMax in the States) to see if she is relying on/falling back on those as the only versions of women she writes/can write…

Thanks for this presentation. I was particularly interested in your comment that ‘boundary-pushing’ female characters can become stereotyped. I would have liked to have heard more about Sally Wainwright’s work, such as ‘Happy Valley’ and the main female character in that series.

Thank you for an interesting presentation. It’s interesting the kinds of drivers there are for characters – we have our ‘woman having a breakdown series’ or things sexual, especially predatory or abusive behaviour sells. I get so tired of stories that focus on neglect and abuse. Where are the fun, cheeky, female characters that aren’t obsesses about getting a man or whose worlds don’t revolve around male recognition or desire? It seems we are almost constantly othered.
