Great presentation, Desha. I wonder in the panel if you could expand more upon the challenges encountered by screenwriters when adding intimacy to historical characters like ‘Harriet’ when the real-life person is such an icon and their stories are so mythic. How can you make sure any deconstruction of the myth still keeps the legend intact? And, what are the specific challenges in adding that intimacy and insight to an African American icon’s story?

Dear Desha,
Really appreciate your presentation, and the new perspective it gives me on movements within the system in the USA (We only tend to hear about ‘Hollywood’ and its products), particularly the new Black Wave of women writers /directors. Would love any overview statement about this movement, its beginnings, its main writers (directors), and the genres which are being renewed through this treatment and focus on intimacy and interior life. Any comment on audience response – particularly along gender lines? Can we finally dispel the myth that only ‘chicks’ will watch stories about women / that only stories with male protagonists make money?

Thanks for that. really interesting. I’ve really enjoyed the space created by webseries – Clench and release, Awkward Black Girl. As they’re less ‘worked’ there seems to be more of a space for different kinds of characters and ways of enacting them.
