Very fascinating and impeccably presented as usual, Kath. I have a few questions, which I will sum up below – with my apologies should any of them sound naive:
– Re: the use of the term “frameless”, is it really correct though? In principle, for it to be literally true we should have a full 360-degree omnidirectional view at all times, shouldn’t we? Whereas, at any given time, even if just temporary we do have a framed portion of that 360 space visible.
– Re: the “non-industrialized nature of CVR”, isn’t CVR actually becoming a big industry?
– One issue I see in your early draft for Impact, is using “viewer” (as part/agent of the ficitional info) as well as “camera” (providing extra fictional info). For instance, in Scene 3, when you write “the viewer very slowly tracks towards her” you imply viewer=camera; whereas, when you write “The viewer moves into Katherine’s personal space, now less than one metre from the camera”, the equation viewer=camera is not so obvious anymore. You have then worked around this in later drafts by using the 2nd person singular (you), but screenplay writing standard manuals actually do tell us that we can use POV shots, the only instance when one can/must write in the 1st pp (we) instead of the 3rd ps (he/she/it). Wouldn’t “we” work around the issue altogether in a simpler, even more accurate way than “you” on the assumption thatn in CVR we=camera at all times?

Much food for thought as the issues arose in the drafting of the script. Getting the terminology right early helps the ‘industry’ become standardised. Would the template developed by Pedro Alves et al be useful here? There are some similarities in your approach and theirs. I would welcome your comment on Paolo’s offering of ‘we’ as a means of indicating the camera in CVR. For me the question is still how do we engage the audience in a way that imparts feeling through story – if time allows can you comment on that in terms of the reception of Impact by participants. One last query does CVR change the sense of audience in its experience? Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant work, Kath. I am wondering if there is an opportunity to see ‘Impact’ here in Western Australia? Which leads me to the further question of use of VR in general. I would really appreciate hearing your comments on what might be the CVR ‘industry’ of the future, and what this may mean for distribution channels.
