Absolutely fascinating. I’d just like to say how refreshing it is to see one of these presentations actually show the speakers — it’s nice to see you both speaking so passionately about your research!

One question I ‘d like to ask is whether productions like Queen Sono or Blood and Water, which appear to be glossy international productions enjoyed by viewers around the world, are received in a different way to a more national drama like Soul City? Or does that international aspect to these Netflix productions carry even more cultural power?

Loved your presentation, Zipho and Lelo! Thank you so much, and ditto to Mike’s comment: Great to see you in person & in varied locations. I’d be really interested to see the productions you name, so will look them up. My question is with regards to the prevalence (or not) of stories with female protagonists / strong cast numbers. I wonder what the stats are for number of productions which have a female protagonist / main characters vs ‘token’ women (or only very minor female characters? It is very hopeful to hear of South Africa reinventing itself through its audiovisual culture, but perhaps this presentation suggests more optimism than is the case amongst the whole spread of local / international production?
So great to get a glimpse of an emerging national character in transformation! Thank you : )
