Thanks for this – my MFA candidates are more and more interested in the writing of video games/interactive media so understanding this new form is paramount in keeping a screenwriting program current and relevant. Thanks for the MFA framework. It’s also fascinating to ponder if films need to tell stories…or if they do, then video games don’t and can now offer the chance to live in a world rather than tell a story of a world. My question is – just like radio continued to live beside films and TV do you think films can simply continue to exist beside interactive media without having to take on those new aspects?

  Thanks for your comment, Rosanne! I am pretty convinced that flat linear films will continue to exist in the future, despite the growing space of immersive and interactive media. And if story (and even realism) was not a necessary destiny to film, as Elsaesser points out, it is clearly not for VR too.

Thanks for this comprehensive overview! I am particularly interested in whether you see any major differences between writing for VR and writing for video games. Do you think the GDD format would be fully applicable for the VR writing, or what specific challenges might the VR writing pose?

  Thanks for your comment! I think that it will depend on what kind of VR we are talking about, as it is a medium that can be used for a variety of screenworks: experiences such as The Line or The Key, which were awarded at the Venice Film Festival, are “written” in a much different way from video games such as Lone Echo or Fallout, even though they are all under the VR umbrella. As I see it, scope, nature and genre of the project will determine the way it will be written.

Mind-blown by this honestly. I would really love to get into this kind of storytelling. It sounds so interesting. Went on Youtube to have a look at some short interactive films. I’m really looking forward to your session just so I can learn more about this.
