I completely agree it is our duty to bring these women’s names back into the study of film history. I appreciate your analysis of how her life experiences influenced her films. What I wonder is why did women who wanted to control all aspects of their films seem to fail when men who did the same to the extent of becoming tyrants (deMille, Griffiths, Selznick) tend to be considered auteurs or moguls? Please let me know about your documentary is available for student viewing.

  Unfortunately, and according to my research, I think the “why” women wanting to control every aspect of their films failed when men didn’t is mostly because they were women. They weren’t supposed to control everything, to be producers or directors. Actresses, screenwriters even, maybe, but not directors or producers. That was not very “ladylike”, at least not in Portugal, it was not their place to occupy such jobs. And in a male-controlled industry, they were mostly shunned out because they were women, they weren’t supposed to have a loud voice.
  
  Sadly, we have reminiscences of that even today. There is still a lack of women directors and screenwriters in Portugal, and that is why I felt making this documentary was important as well, because it will be directed by women who will give their own perspective on this story. We are still in the developing phases of the documentary, but as soon as it is done and available for all, I will surely let you know. Thank you!
