Thank you. Incredibly interesting. As a female writer director who is trying to write different characters, engage with the indigenous and have mostly female characters, I’m wondering at the lack of interest in a script I think has potential. It’s taken me years to be comfortable with the fact I am talented but it’s soul destroying when you feel you are not seen by others. I think “it’s not me, it’s the system” is a good adage. The problem is, it makes it difficult to work out if when it is you and what is legitimate rejection. Very bewildering space to be in as a writer director. And also, where do you find the producers that understand what it is that you’re trying to do and can help in that journey? (rhetorical question, but a challenge).

Devastating (and depressing) study Raija! Have there been any other similar studies, which can be compared? (Is the trend generally up or down?) Did your groundwork come up with anything similar in other countries?

Agreed — really depressing and interesting, Raija. I’ve had similar responses and stories from female filmmakers I’ve interviewed over the years (in many different countries). I’m looking forward to discussing your study!
