Enjoyed this very much. I have long been interested in the construction of Betrayal and your presentation gave both insight and inspiration. I am currently working on a screenplay that uses flashbacks as a way of informing the present – and could be an anochronic structure. Thank you for sharing.

Unbelievably, I haven’t seen Betrayal and that is something I must rectify. However, when I read the plot outline and the temporal structure it reminded me instantly of Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along” which premiered at roughly the same time as Pinter’s play. This was an adaptation of a 1934 play of the same time, which seems a very daring use of time for that era! Like Deborah above, my current PhD project uses this notion of past, present and future all running concurrently as well so this presentation was really helpful and illuminating.

I wonder, do you think there is a reason that these anachronic narratives often seem to originate in stage works (The Father was originally a play, too)?
